Remember Danny From ‘Caddyshack’? Michael O’Keefe Still Has That Famous Goofy Smile

Caddyshack star Michael O’Keefe still sports that goofy smile that catapulted him to fame in the classic golf comedy.

O’Keefe, 71, found fame in the role of caddie Danny Noonan in the iconic 1980 comedic film, which has gone down in history as a classic thanks to supporting roles from Chevy Chase,  Rodney Dangerfield, Ted Knight, and Bill Murray. The movie told the story of Danny’s wild doings as a caddie at the exclusive Bushwood Country Club, where he’s forced to haul clubs for the outlandish members. But in a new interview, O’Keefe opened up about how drugs like cocaine had plenty of room in the film’s budget. It was the ’70s when the movie was filmed, after all.

“There was some miscellaneous item,” O’Keefe told Page Six in a new interview. “It was the 70s… That’s what was happening back then. People were just treating it like it was toothpaste, and you had to do it twice a day to stay healthy.”

Looking back on his time in the film, he can see that drugs didn’t have the best effects on him.

“It was not my favorite memory because in retrospect I can see those moments on camera and I’m not too happy about them,” he shared.

The actor realized his mistakes and found himself ditching the drug when filming was done.

“But I can report to you that right after that movie, during that movie, was the last time I ever did anything like cocaine. I realized that it was a terrible thing to get involved [with], and like so many things in the drug world, it looked like fun, but in reality, it wasn’t,” he said, also noting that the death of Caddyshack writer Doug Kenney was a “huge wake-up call.”

O’Keefe is still a frequent actor, and you’ve likely watched him in one of TV’s most popular shows. He played Jon Hamm‘s dad on Apple TV’s hit series, Your Friends & Neighbors. The star hit the red carpet for the show’s season 2 premiere a few months back, and still sports that goofy smile that catapulted him to stardom as Danny in Caddyshack.
