As King Charles III continues his reign in the United Kingdom, the nearby royal family of Luxembourg might be preparing for a transition of rulers in the near future.

The Grand Ducal Court shared an announcement from Grand Duke Henri of Luxembourg earlier this year, saying, translated from French, “Together with the Grand Duchess, Prince Guillaume and Princess Stéphanie, I want to inform you that I have decided to appoint Prince Guillaume as Lieutenant Representative in October.”

“It is with all my love and all my trust that I wish him good luck,” added the Grand Duke. According to the Grand Ducal Court, the appointment of lieutenant representative traditionally happens as part of the transfer of power, with the position compared to that of a royal regent.

The new position for Guillaume will allow him to take on certain responsibilities of the Grand Duke, while his father remains the head of state for the time being.

While Guillaume is expected to succeed his 69-year-old father on the throne whenever he decides to voluntarily abdicate or if he passes away, the appointment of Guillaume as lieutenant representative doesn’t necessarily mean that the Grand Duke plans to abdicate anytime soon.

On Oct. 8, the official ceremony to appoint Guillaume as lieutenant representative took place at the Grand Ducal Palace. The 42-year-old was sworn in at 3:30 p.m. local time.

In an interview talking about Guillaume’s appointment, the Grand Duke noted that he was 43 years old when he took on the position during his father’s reign, and his son is now almost the same age.

He also touched on why the appointment is important to making the future transfer of power smooth, saying, “When we are well prepared, we accept the transition more easily.”

The Grand Duke was appointed as lieutenant representative to his father, the late Grand Duke Jean, in 1998, but he didn’t take over as the Grand Duke until 2000, when his father officially abdicated.
