The next Star Wars movie — after 2026’s The Mandalorian & Grogu, that is — has begun filming in the U.K., with a 2027 theatrical release in sight, Lucasfilm announced Thursday. Star Wars: Starfighter will be a stand-alone story set in a previously unexplored time period of the Star Wars cinematic saga, and stars Ryan Gosling (presumably as the film’s titular handsome and charismatic starfighter).

Gosling isn’t the only big name set to appear in Star Wars: Starfighter. Lucasfilm has confirmed much of the principal cast, confirming that Matt Smith, Mia Goth, and Amy Adams will also journey to George Lucas’ galaxy far, far away. They’ll be joined by Aaron Pierre, Simon Bird, Jamael Westman, Daniel Ings, and Flynn Gray (pictured above sitting on a landspeeder next to Gosling).

Star Wars: Starfighter is an original story, and has no relation to the 2001 prequel-era Star Wars video game of the same name. Shawn Levy (Free Guy, Deadpool and Wolverine) is directing a script by Jonathan Topper (Warrior, Your Friends and Neighbors).

“I feel a profound sense of excitement and honor as we begin production on Star Wars: Starfighter,” Levy said in an announcement posted to the Star Wars website. “From the day Kathy Kennedy called me up, inviting me to develop an original adventure in this incredible Star Wars galaxy, this experience has been a dream come true, creatively and personally. Star Wars shaped my sense of what story can do, how characters and cinematic moments can live with us forever. To join this storytelling galaxy with such brilliant collaborators onscreen and off, is the thrill of a lifetime.”

Star Wars: Starfighter will be released theatrically on May 28, 2027.
