Ryan Reynolds has joined the ranks of Canadian icons like Céline Dion and Alex Trebek, being awarded the country’s highest civilian honour.
On Wednesday, Governor General Mary Simon made 88 new appointments to the Order of Canada, including one companion, 24 officers and 63 members.
“Members of the Order of Canada are builders of hope for a better future. Each in their own way, they broaden the realm of possibilities and inspire others to continue pushing its boundaries,” said Simon in a statement.
“Thank you for your perseverance, fearless leadership and visionary spirit, and welcome to the Order of Canada.”
Reynolds has been appointed as one of the officers, not only for his success in film, but also for giving back to the community.
“Ryan Reynolds has captivated audiences worldwide, notably writing, producing and starring in the widely successful Deadpool films,” stated the Order of Canada.
“Off-screen, he supports Canadian causes including Water First Education, Covenant House Vancouver and Sick Kids Foundation, and co-founded initiatives to increase opportunities for under-represented groups. His far-reaching philanthropy continues to strengthen communities nationwide.”
Over the summer, Reynolds got to return to home soil for the premiere of the highly anticipated film Deadpool and Wolverine.
The Vancouverite and his co-star Hugh Jackman spoke on the red carpet and shared their fave Canadian traits that inspired the Albertan Wolverine and Deadpool, who’s originally from Saskatchewan.

While many might know Reynolds for his portrayal of the wise-cracking superhero, he’s also as generous when it comes to giving back to charities.
In 2022, the actor promised to match $1 million in donations to support Ukraine and donated $500,000 to an organization addressing the Indigenous water crisis.
Currently, Reynolds and his wife Blake Lively are promising to match up to $500,000 in donations to SickKids.
Reynolds isn’t the only famous Canadian appointed to the Order in the past couple of years.
Earlier this year, pop-punk princess Avril Lavigne was appointed for her musical and cultural contribution to the country. Former CTV National News anchor Lisa LaFlamme was appointed in 2019 and received her medal in 2022.
New members of the Order of Canada will be invited to a ceremony at a later date to receive their insignia.
