Saoirse Ronan Leaves Male Actors in Stunned Silence With Just 10 Words

Saoirse Ronan was not having it when male actors Paul Mescal and Eddie Redmayne chatted with Graham Norton on The Graham Norton Show about using a phone to protect yourself.

During one moment of a recent episode of the talk show, which also included Denzel Washington as a guest, Mescal talked about learning how to defend himself with a phone before he started joking about it, saying, “Who is actually going to think about that? If someone actually attacked me, I’m not going to go ‘phone.'”

“I think—yeah, but—” said Ronan, trying to get a word in. Norton, Mescal and Redmayne continued joking, with Mescal acting out an unserious scenario as he said, “Sorry mum, one second. BANG.”

Redmayne agreed with Mescal, commenting, “That’s a very good point,” before Ronan gave up on politely waiting her turn and raised her voice to state, “That’s what girls have to think about all the time.”

Her comment completely shut down the male actors’ jokes, with Mescal and Redmayne sharing agreement after a moment of silence. Ronan then asked the audience, “Am I right, ladies?” as they cheered. 

The moment quickly went viral, and a fan shared the clip on X with the caption, “the silence after saoirse’s ‘that’s what girls have to think about all the time’ oh you just know they all felt stupid after that.”

Others shared their thoughts in the replies, with a top-liked comment saying, “Men have the luxury of joking about situations that women would be threatened and horrified in. Our experiences are so different!”

“The way she waited to hear about their privilege, then hit them with a reality check,” said another, as a third chimed in, “she got them FLABBERGASTED ✨✨.”

Someone else noted the quick change in mood when Ronan spoke up, writing, “They were cackling and she sat there, not amused in the slightest, and then dropped that line.”

Many more people specifically highlighted the moment after the actress shared her thoughts, with people calling it “satisfying,” “so powerful,” “just chilling,” and “you could hear a pin drop.”

Ronan is currently promoting her new movie, World War II-set drama Blitz, which is set to come out on Nov. 1, 2024.
