Seattle is getting an elevated park with 360° views of the city

Look up there! It’s a bird, it’s a plane, no… it’s Seattle’s newest park! Mayor Harrell and his offices have announced that Overlook Walk will be opening to the public on Friday, October 4th, 2024.

This newest addition to the Waterfront means the city is that much closer to completing the transformation of Waterfront Park, the largest civic project in Seattle since the 1962 World’s Fair.

Here’s everything you need to know about Seattle’s newest addition.

Where will it be?

Located where the Alaskan Way Viaduct used to be, this elevated park will provide a new pedestrian connection between Pike Place Market, downtown neighborhoods, and the entire 20-acre Waterfront Park. That means your evening strolls are about to get a major upgrade if you live nearby!

“Waterfront Park, particularly Overlook Walk, will be a dynamic landmark that honors our past, highlights Seattle’s spirit of innovation, and welcomes everyone to experience the city’s natural beauty and vibrant culture. This once-in-a-generation transformation represents a powerful reconnection of space and people, as visitors, residents, workers, and families will enjoy seamless connections between downtown, Pike Place Market, and the entire Waterfront Park—the entryway to our region,” said Mayor Bruce Harrell.

What can you expect?

Overlook Walk began construction back in the summer of 2022, taking about 2 years to complete. Now the new Seattle park will span the nearly 100 gap between Pike Place Market and the new Park Promenade.

That means you’ll be able to easily walk between downtown and the waterfront once it’s open!

Of course, a big reason to visit is the views. The park is situated in the perfect spot for 360° vistas of downtown Seattle. You’ll be able to see everything from Lumen Field, T-Mobile Park, Elliott Bay, the Olympic Mountains, and Mount Rainier! So with that in mind, they added lots of seating so you can enjoy the sights.

There are also plans to add a concessionaire space for local small businesses later in 2025.
