The sun is shining and the grass is turning green, so you might be feeling adventurous! If you’re among those hoping to stretch your legs after a long winter, Johnston Canyon is a magical Alberta must-visit.
Located in Banff National Park, this stunning destination is well-travelled, photographed by many, and beloved by visitors and locals alike.
Why Johnston Canyon?
With lush trees, unique shops, bright blue lakes, and an array of waterfalls, Banff has no shortage of things to do and places to see, but one of the most scenic is Johnston Canyon.
Located about 30 minutes from the townsite, this enchanting destination is best known for its seven spectacular waterfalls and various viewpoints.
It doesn’t matter if you’re a novice hiker or a seasoned professional; there’s a route for you.
Catwalks and trails are well-maintained, and engaging tours are offered year-round, but be warned that this enchanting spot is no secret to those familiar with the area. In the warmer months, the trail can get pretty busy, but it’s still worth checking out.
When to visit
Want to get your boots on the ground?
Travel Alberta recommends planning ahead if it’s on your to-do list.
“Johnston Canyon is Banff National Park’s most popular hiking destination for good reason,” they write.
“An early-morning or evening start is best for avoiding the summer crowds, and the ideal times to enjoy Johnston Canyon are before 8 a.m. or after 6 p.m. in the summer months.”
What to expect

As the name would suggest, this exciting hike will take you deep into the canyon, on both wide paths and narrow bridges; however, it’s up to you how far you want to explore. At Johnston Canyon, you have options!
Follow the railings to the lower falls or travel further to see a 30-metre high chute. Then, for a different perspective, continue 265 metres to the upper falls viewpoint or challenge yourself to reach the meadow where the ink pots bubble from deep below the Earth’s surface.
No matter what you decide, you’re in for a treat, but here’s how Parks Canada breaks it down for experienced hikers:
Lower Falls
Length: 1.2 km one way to the Lower Falls from the trailhead (Johnston Canyon Day-use Area)
Elevation gain: 50 m
Hiking time: 1 hour round trip
Upper Falls
Length: 2.5 km one way to the Upper Falls from the trailhead (Johnston Canyon Day-use Area)
Elevation gain: 120 m
Hiking time: 2 hours round trip
