The Sims 4 is getting a surprising aquatic crossover, with not one but two SpongeBob SquarePants Kits releasing Dec. 4. Their titles are both fairly self-explanatory: the SpongeBob’s House Kit is focused around the square fellow himself and objects seen in his home within the show, while the SpongeBob Kids Room Kit is more about children’s items inspired by the IP like plushies. This release comes only a few weeks before The SpongeBob Movie: Search for SquarePants arrives in theaters on Dec. 19.

Kits have been a part of The Sims 4 for a while now, first debuting in 2021. They’re the smallest form of DLC offered for the game, typically containing a handful of items centered around a particular aesthetic like country kitchen or fall apparel. It’s a rarity that any sort of Sims DLC does a direct crossover with an IP. Besides a few exceptions, like the much-maligned Journey to Batuu Game Pack or when a poster for It Takes Two came to the game, the franchise typically sticks to its own universe.

The SpongeBob’s House Kit features items like his diver’s helmet TV, a foghorn alarm clock, and even a magic conch. The Kids Room Kit includes themed items like a bed, desk, and wall decals. The two Kits can be purchased separately for $6.99 each beginning Dec. 4, or both together at a discount in the Bikini Bottom Bundle for $9.99. The bundle deal is only available for purchase until March 3, and comes with three special items: the Flying Dutchman’s Jungle Gym, Goofy Goober Guitar, and Conch Street Aquarium.

It’s arguably one of the weirdest Kits released for The Sims 4, and seeing so much direct representation of a well-known IP within the game is somewhat jarring. That said, there’s definitely an audience for this sort of thing with niche groups of players. Some Simmers really do enjoy making representations of beloved characters in-game, and the promo image showing a Sim-ified Squidward did admittedly get a chuckle out of me.

The Kids Room Kit is probably the more universally applicable of the pair, as it does make sense for a child Sim to have their room decked out in SpongeBob merch. Some of the more basic nautical items could also be applicable for things like sea-loving Sims, but at the heart of it, these Kits are really for the SpongeBob stans who are looking to have the best day ever.
