St. Andrew’s Society of Winnipeg hosts the Great Canadian Kilt Skate – Winnipeg

Winnipeg’s St. Andrews Society hosted the Great Canadian Quilt Skating on Riley Duck Pond in Assiniboine Park on Sunday.

“Ten minutes or two hours, you don’t have to be Scottish, you don’t have to wear kilts and tartans and even plaid and skate. I don’t ask,” said Evelyn Mitchell, the association’s past president and this year’s organizer.

All events were free and ran from 1:00 pm to 3:00 pm. Canadian Cameron Her Highlanders, members of Queens Her Own, dressed up in kilt uniforms.

The Great Canadian Kilt Skate was started in 2015 by the Scottish Association of Ottawa and is held in several cities across the country.

It has also spread to countries such as Australia and the United States, known as the Great Kilt Skate. Winnipeg has won the Great Canadian Kilt Skate title in 2021.

The event started with ribbon cutting and hot chocolate was served.

Lieutenant Colonel John Baker, commander of the Queen’s Own Cameron Highlanders of Canada, said temperatures at Kiltskating last year were at least -30 degrees Celsius.

“Some of our soldiers attended the event in kilts, uniforms, and bare feet, carrying flags to interact with the participants. Even though it was cold, it was a lot of fun.”
