Lucky Day and Ned Nederlander have a new amigo these days: Selena Gomez.

While promoting the new season of their Emmy-nominated comedy Only Murders in the Building, Steve Martin told Parade that if he and co-star Martin Short could reboot one of their classic films with Gomez joining the cast, his choice would be Three Amigos!.

“I mean it’d have to be,” Martin said, with Short agreeing, “Yes.”

“That would be fun,” Gomez said.

“You’d be the heroine,” Martin told her. “That’d be fantastic.”

The movie Three Amigos!, released in 1986, starred Martin, Short and Chevy Chase as silent film actors Lucky Day, Ned Nederlander and Dusty Bottoms. The trio mistakenly believe they’ve been hired to put on a show in Mexico, only to learn that villagers hired them, thinking they were real heroes, to stop the villainous El Guapo.

In addition to Three Amigos!, Short had another one of his and Martin’s beloved movies in mind for a reboot with Gomez. And it’s a fitting choice given the actress’s engagement to Benny Blanco.

Father of the Bride could work,” Short remarked.

Father of the Bride,” Martin repeated.

“Yes,” Short said, prompting Gomez to let out an “aw.”

Martin played the titular character, George Banks, in the heartwarming 1991 film, while Short portrayed the eccentric wedding planner Franck Eggelhoffer.

The longtime friends and Gomez have become a tight-knit trio since working together on Hulu’s hit series Only Murders in the Building, which returns for its fifth season on Sept. 9.

As for when the two comedy legends realized that Gomez had became their third amigo, Short told Parade, “It happened very, very quickl. Right from the first scene we shot, the first scene the three of us shot together, which was in a restaurant. So if you look at that scene again, it is amazing how everyone’s into their own milieu, you know.”

Martin added, “The first show was shot during COVID. So our first reading, we had not even met Selena. We just met on Zoom, and we’re reading the script and she had already been cast. And Marty and I called each other and said, ‘She’s fantastic. She’s perfect for this.’ And we really did that. There was a quality element where you go, ‘Oh yeah, she’s perfect for it.’ And then the personal element was like a week. Just if anybody shows up on time, I like them.”

Hearing Martin and Short sing her praises admittedly makes Gomez—every time—”so uncomfortable in the best way.” She explained to Parade, “Just because I understand what sitting between these two guys means. And it’s awesome. I’m really grateful that they had me on board.”

Season 5 of Only Murders in the Building premieres Sept. 9 with three episodes, followed by new episodes every week on Hulu.
