Rachel Brosnahan will be making a major career move soon.
It was announced on Thursday by Deadline that the Emmy-winning actress will be making her directorial debut with a documentary about fashion icon and her aunt, Kate Spade.
Spade, who was born as Katherine Noel Brosnahan, was a fashion designer and businesswoman best known for her brand Kate Spade New York. The late designer founded her company in 1993 alongside her husband, Andy, and they met while Kate was a college student at Arizona State University, working at Carter Men’s Shop in Phoenix. In 2018, Spade was found dead in her Manhattan home by suicide.
Kate Spade’s playful and colorful designs helped redefine modern American style, leaving a lasting impact on both fashion and the way women expressed confidence through what they wore. Her accessible yet chic designs not only changed the accessories market but also influenced a cultural shift toward joyful, self-expressive fashion.
The documentary is being produced under a partnership between Brosnahan’s production company, Scrap Paper Pictures, Fisher Stevens’ Highly Flammable and Connor Schell’s Words + Pictures. Stevens, Maura Anderson, Zak Kilberg, Libby Geist, Alexa Conway and Andy Spade will serve as executive producers.
“Rachel is a remarkably talented storyteller and she has the most personal of connections to Kate Spade’s powerful story,” said Schell of Words + Pictures to Deadline. “We are thrilled to be working with her as she directs her first film.”
Brosnahan is an Emmy and Golden Globe–winning actress best known for her breakout role as Miriam “Midge” Maisel in the acclaimed series The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel. Born in Milwaukee and raised in Illinois, she began acting in high school before studying theater at New York University.
Now 35 years old, her early roles in House of Cards, Manhattan and various indie films were how she quickly earned her reputation as an actress. Beyond television, Brosnahan has appeared in films such as I’m Your Woman, Dead for a Dollar and Superman.

Currently, the documentary is in the very early stages of production. A release date has not been announced yet.
