If you’re a fan of shows like Yellowstone or Heartland, we’ve found the perfect place to live out your ranching fantasy. Homeplace Ranch is located in the idyllic Alberta foothills, and besides the lovely scenery, they offer year-round horseback rides!

Enjoy 600 acres of unspoiled wilderness on the back of your very own horse, for the afternoon that is. This stunning destination is less than an hour west of Calgary and has been serving up quintessential western experiences for over 50 years.

“Owned and operated by passionate horseman Mac MaKenny since 1974, Homeplace Ranch is committed to giving you a real Western experience unlike any you will find elsewhere,” explains their website.

Here’s what you need to know before you saddle up.

What to expect

Of course, one does not simply show up and hop on a horse.

You can book a riding lesson, horse awareness class, or horseback ride any time of the year. But you need to make an appointment first.

If horseback riding is what got your attention, then you’ll love the two-hour trail experience. Each ride includes a lesson on mounting, dismounting, leading, and giving your horse cues for a smooth journey.

The ride itself takes you through the scenic Alberta foothills. In the warmer months, you can expect to see charming meadows brimming with life and wildflowers. In the fall, prepare yourself for golden trees and radiant foliage. For those who love a snowy backdrop, bundle up and witness the Canadian Rockies in all their glory with a winter ride.

Honestly, you should try a horseback ride in all seasons — just to compare!

Depending on the weather, you can book a two-hour ride starting at either 10 a.m. or 2 p.m. No matter when you decide to go, you can expect a one-of-a-kind experience complete with horse bonding and incredible sights. You’ll also get to learn a ton about the surrounding landscape and resident critters, both big and small.

“Break away from the bustle and pressures of everyday life by immersing yourself in the experience.”

Don’t need to tell us twice!
