We’ve experienced the Summer of Taylor Swift for multiple summers now. With all the coverage of her marriage to Travis Kelce, there’s just been nonstop Swift news and coverage. But are we surprised? Swift continues to have a tight grip on the cultural moment regardless of the time of year. However, with the arrival of August, there’s yet another reason why Swift owns the summer: her folklore song “august” has inspired fans to claim the month as hers (and theirs). 

“August” is the eighth song on Swift’s 2020 album, folklore, and, of course, the eighth month of the year. And with a song that shares a name with a month, it makes sense that Swifties are using August as just another time to post about their love for Swift and “august.” 

The song tells the story of the girl James was cheating on Betty with (you know, the folklore love triangle that includes the songs “cardigan,” “betty” and “august”). Heartbreaking lyrics with a wistful undertone—wishing to belong to someone instead of being someone’s second choice—it makes sense that Swifties love the song and want to commemorate it with the start of August.
