Frontmezzjunkies reports: Joshua Henry Leads a Night of Extraordinary Theatre at the Drama League Awards

By Ross

It was a thrilling night, with the announcement of the 2026 Drama League Award winners offering a powerful opportunity to revisit many unforgettable achievements.

Presented on May 15 at the Ziegfeld Ballroom, this year’s awards recognize a remarkable range of work from across New York theatre. Joshua Henry received the coveted Distinguished Performance Award for his Tony-nominated portrayal of Coalhouse Walker Jr. in Ragtime, a singular honour that can only be awarded to an artist once in a lifetime. Other major winners included Mexodus for Outstanding Production of a Musical, Liberation for Outstanding Production of a Play, Lear deBessonet for her direction of Ragtime, and Joe Mantello for his work on Death of a Salesman.

The ceremony also celebrated several influential figures whose contributions continue to shape the theatre community. Caissie Levy received the Distinguished Achievement in Musical Theater Award, while David Cromer was honoured with the Founders Award for Excellence in Directing. Kamilah Forbes received the Contribution to the Theater Award, and Scott Ellis was recognized with the Gratitude Award. Hosted by Frank DiLella, the event highlighted not only the year’s most acclaimed productions, but also the artists and advocates whose dedication continues to sustain the field.

Founded in 1922 and formalized in 1935, The Drama League has spent more than a century championing directors, artists, and audiences. Reading through this year’s winners, I am struck again by how theatre preserves those fleeting moments when storytelling, performance, and emotion align with uncommon precision. Whether through Joshua Henry’s commanding work in Ragtime or the many productions honoured across Broadway and Off-Broadway, these awards capture a season defined by imagination, risk, and artistry that continues to resonate long after the curtain has fallen.
