Few things are as electric as being in the audience for an amazing Broadway show, but with ticket prices soaring to the three-figure and even four-figure marks, it can be incredibly costly to experience a night out at the theater.

But who says you have to leave the comfort of your couch or fork over a serious sum of money to enjoy Broadway? Luckily for theater lovers, you can tune into some of the finest stage performances via streaming platforms, where you’ll find professionally filmed versions of Tony Award winners like Hamilton and Come From Away.

Acclaimed titles like those will soon be joined by a big ticket recording from this season’s Broadway lineup. You’ll be able to see George Clooney in his record-breaking play Good Night, and Good Luck—currently the highest-grossing show on Broadway—for free when a televised version of the five-time Tony-nominated production airs on CNN next month on June 7.

Best Broadway shows you can watch now on streaming

Hamilton

The Lin-Manuel Miranda-penned pop cultural phenomenon—which narrates the life of American Founding Father Alexander Hamilton across two rap-filled acts, from his marriage to Eliza Schuyler to his interactions with Aaron Burr to his involvement in the American Revolutionary War—was released as a live stage recording in 2020. Miranda as Hamilton lead the musical’s original Broadway cast, including Leslie Odom Jr., Phillipa Soo, Daveed Diggs, Anthony Ramos and Jonathan Groff. The filmed version of Hamilton, which won the Emmy for Outstanding Variety Special in 2020, is currently available to stream on Disney+.

Come From Away

The 2021 musical film Come From Away, a live recording of Irene Sankoff and David Hein‘s 2017 musical of the same name, tells the true story of 7,000 airline passengers who were stranded in the small town of Gander in Newfoundland, where they were housed, fed and welcomed after the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks. The recorded performance takes on extra poignancy thanks to the individuals in the audience during filming. Those seats were filled with frontline workers and 9/11 survivors as they watched members of the Broadway cast (Jenn Colella, Petrina Bromley, De’Lon Grant) reprise their roles at the Gerald Schoenfeld Theater in New York City. The recording of Come From Away is available to watch on Apple TV+.

American Utopia

Is there anyone cooler than David Byrne? You can see the music icon in all of his eccentric glory in 2020’s American Utopia, a Spike Lee-directed live recording of Byrne’s acclaimed Broadway show of the same name. Pulling from the performer’s incredible discography, including his solo career and his Talking Heads catalog, the show sees the singer perform alongside eleven musicians, all of whom used wireless or portable equipment. Recorded during the show’s Broadway run at the Hudson Theatre, the filmed edition of American Utopia can currently be watched on HBO’s streaming service Max.

Newsies

Recorded live on stage at the Pantages Theatre in Hollywood, California, Newsies—an energetic musical based on the 1992 Disney film by Kenny Ortega—sees Jack Kelly (played by Jeremy Jordan) lead a ragged band of teenage paperboys against two publishing titans intent on raising distribution prices at the boys’ expense. Jordan is joined by fellow alumni of the original Broadway production, including Kara Lindsay as Katherine, Ben Fankhauser as Davey, Andrew Keenan-Bolger as Crutchie and Tommy Bracco as Spot Conlon. You can tune in to the filmed version of Newsies on Disney+.

Cats

The 2019 big-screen adaptation starring Jennifer Hudson, James Corden and Taylor Swift is, in a word, awful, so you’re far better off seeking out the 1998 direct-to-video musical film of the Andrew Lloyd Webber stage musical. One of the longest-running Broadway shows, Cats tells the story of the Jellicles, a tribe of cats who gather once a year for the Jellicle Ball, after which their leader, Old Deuteronomy, chooses one cat to be reborn into a new life in the Heaviside Layer. You can currently buy the filmed version of Cats on Amazon Prime; it’s also available to stream on Broadway HD.

Vanya

What’s better than one Andrew Scott? Eight Andrew Scotts! Okay, sure, the Irish actor wasn’t cloned for Simon Stephens’ recent modern interpretation of Anton Chekhov‘s Uncle Vanya, but he does manage to play eight different characters in the stage production, which earned the actor a Critics’ Circle win and an Olivier Award nomination for Best Actor. “Hopes, dreams, and regrets are thrust into sharp focus in” in the one-man reimagining, which “explores the complexities of human emotions,” per the show’s logline. Filmed during its sold-out run in London’s West End, the filmed version of Vanya can be watched on the National Theatre at Home streaming service.

Waitress

Singer-actress Sara Bareilles, who wrote the music and lyrics for the musical dramedy Waitress, stars as the titular small-town server Jenna Hunterson in the 2023 live recording of the stage show. Based on the sweet 2007 film of the same name by the late, great Adrienne Shelly, the musical sees Jenna desperate to leave her abusive husband Earl (played by Joe Tippett) but when she unexpectedly becomes pregnant with Earl’s child, she begins an affair with her obstetrician, Dr. Jim Pomatter (Drew Gehling). A two-hour-plus performance of the stage musical was recorded in 2021 during its limited run at the Ethel Barrymore Theatre in New York City; you can now watch Waitress: The Musical on Max.

Rent

If you weren’t able to feel the energy and emotion of the final performance of the legendary Broadway show Rent, you can now—Rent: Filmed Live on Broadway is just that, a recording of the last show of the original run of Rent, filmed on September 8, 2008. Along with the full stage show, which starred Adam Kantor, Will Chase, Rodney Hicks, Tracie Thoms, Renée Elise Goldsberry and Eden Espinosa, among others, the filmed version includes behind-the-scenes footage from filming, as well as a reprisal of the seminal ballad “Seasons of Love,” featuring cast members from past productions, including the original Broadway cast. You can purchase the filmed performance on Apple TV, Amazon Prime Video and Fandango at Home.

Anything Goes

There have been numerous movie versions of the 1930s musical Anything Goes but you can also check out a filmed recording of the 2021 stage production, a London revival directed and choreographed by Kathleen Marshall and starring Sutton Foster as Reno Sweeney. Set aboard the luxurious S.S. American that’s sailing from New York to London, the story follows a love triangle involving Reno, a nightclub singer-turned-evangelist; Billy Crocker (Samuel Edwards), a lovelorn stockbroker-slash-stowaway; and Hope Harcourt (Nicole-Lily Baisden), the debutante heiress he’s in love with but who is already engaged to a wealthy British lord. The filmed version of Anything Goes can be streamed with a Prime Video subscription.

Kinky Boots

The Tony, Grammy and Olivier Award-winning musical Kinky Boots comes from some pop-culture heavyweights: we’re talking music and lyrics by singing icon Cyndi Lauper, book by legendary playwright Harvey Fierstein, and direction and choreography by Tony winner Jerry Mitchell (The Full Monty, Hairspray).  The West End production of the show, which starred Matt Henry as Lola and Killian Donnelly as Charlie, was captured live at London’s Adelphi Theatre and released in cinemas in June 2019. The filmed performance is available for streaming on BroadwayHD and Great Performances (PBS).

Into the Woods

Long before the likes of Meryl Streep, Emily Blunt and James Corden took on the classic Stephen Sondheim show in a movie adaptation, the original Broadway production of Into the Woods was given the screen treatment with a live recording filmed at New York’s Martin Beck Theatre in front of an audience in 1989 and broadcast on PBS’s American Playhouse in 1991. The recording reunited original cast members such as Bernadette Peters, Danielle Ferland, Ben Wright, Kim Crosby, Chip Zien and Tom Aldredge, among others, as they performed various intertwined plots from Brothers Grimm fairy tales. The original Broadway recording is available for streaming on various platforms including Amazon Prime Video, BroadwayHD and YouTube.

Billy Elliot the Musical

Stephen Daldry, who directed the 2000 film Billy Elliot, returned to the director’s seat for the 2014 filmed version of the coming-of-age stage musical. With songs by Elton John, the musical adaptation similarly focuses on an eleven-year-old British boy (played by Elliott Hanna) living in a coal-mining family County Durham in the mid-1980s, who goes against the wishes of his father (Deka Walmsley) and follows his dreams of becoming a professional ballet dancer. Filmed in September 2014 at the Victoria Palace Theatre in London’s West End, Billy Elliot: The Musical Live is available to watch with a Prime Video subscription.
