Following the debut of the Steam Deck OLED in late 2023, the $399 Steam Deck now comes with 256 GB of internal storage. That’s a lot more than the 64 GB it used to come with at that introductory price point, but it still may not be enough storage for your gaming needs. Thankfully, upgrading the Deck’s storage is both easy and relatively affordable.

Like the Nintendo Switch and other handhelds, every Steam Deck supports microSD cards as an option for storage expansion, and those tiny cards come in a range of capacities — many of which are regularly discounted. A microSD card is one of a few must-have Steam Deck accessories that we recommend for most people. Alternatively, installing an M.2 SSD will result in faster storage and doesn’t cost much more, but it’s a more difficult process on the Deck than it is with other handheld gaming PCs, and it may void your warranty if something goes wrong.

Whether you want a modest upgrade to 256 GB, a larger 512 GB card, or up to 1.5 TB of extra storage, we have some recommendations below that’ll let you download even more games without concerning yourself about available storage. Once you insert your new microSD card on the bottom of your Deck, you’ll just need to go through a quick formatting process so you can store games on it.
