What’s better than one Canadian hosting an award show? Two Canadians! A Candian father and son duo to be exact. Eugene and Dan Levy became the first father-son duo to host The Emmy Awards, taking the stage to guide the show’s 76th edition, and they certainly made it a night to remember.

Canadian politeness

One thing Eugene Levy and Dan Levy made sure to do was throw in a Canadian joke and we love them for it.

The pair opened the show with a back-and-forth, saying “In what can only be described as a cruel joke, two Canadians have been put in charge of playing you off tonight.”

“Canadians don’t like interrupting anybody. It goes against our nature,” added Eugene.

Dan joked back, “Confrontation in general is anxiety-inducing, especially for my 77-year-old father!”

‘The Bear’

Of course, “The Bear” was honoured as it won big again at The Emmy Awards, and there was an obvious joke to be made.

The show, which is considered pretty serious to some, has won awards for comedy and the duo couldn’t help but poke fun.

“‘I know some of you might be expecting us to make a joke about whether ‘The Bear’ is a comedy, but in true spirit of ‘The Bear’ we will not be making any jokes,” quipped Eugene.

‘Schitt’s Creek’ mention & reunion

The father and son had to bring up their iconic show “Schitt’s Creek”, which was not only filled with a Canadian cast but also filmed in Canada.

“This is a very special night for me, you know, I played a lot of dads in my day! Yes, I was a dad in American Pie, I was a dad in Finding Dory, and our show, Schitt’s Creek. But without question, my most rewarding dad role ever has been being your dad…in Schitt’s Creek because it got my first acting Emmy,” Eugene joked.

Later in the evening Catherine O’Hara and Annie Murphy joined Eugene and Dan on stage to present the award for best comedy series, making it a “Schitt’s Creek” reunion!

Audience interactions

Something else a good host makes sure to do is have good audience interaction and these two did just that.

Eugene and Dan Levy called out and included some of the big names in the audience like making a nod at Quinta Brunson for her outstanding role in “Abbott Elementary”, and adding a hilarious joke about Hannah Einbinder’s role in “Hacks” saying we’ve “all had a codependent, borderline homoerotic relationship with our boss” like her.

The two continued by mentioning “universal truths” such as how “we’ve all struggled to make friends in a new city like Carrie Coon in ‘The Gilded Age’.”

Best hosts ever?

Now maybe I’m biased as a Canadian but it seems like the duo won over more than just the Canucks of the world.

Vogue published an article following The Emmy Awards with the title “Let Eugene and Dan Levy Host Every Award Show, Please”.

The article spoke about how the two’s dynamic from their show “Schitt’s Creek” translated perfectly as a hosting pair, and I couldn’t agree more.

History

And of course, as mentioned, Eugene and Dan Levy made history at The Emmy Awards as the first father-son duo to host together.

Way to go, Canadians!
