Welcome back to the Calgary group chat. A new week in the city means there’s plenty to talk about, from new openings to events, pop-ups and a few updates you’ll want to keep on your radar.

So, if you’re ready, we’ve got quite a few juicy topics to jump into this week. Whether you’re someone who likes to plan ahead or just stay in the loop on what’s going on around town, you’re in the right place.

Let’s get into it!

What’s new, Calgary?

From rain boots to smoke warnings, real quick

First on the list this week is the weather, which has been quite literally all over the place. After spending the weekend in full rain mode, Calgary is now under a smoke warning, so it’s important to be a bit more mindful when spending time outdoors. If you’re heading out for Canada Day this week, it’s worth checking the conditions before making any outdoor plans.

Your Canada Day fireworks game plan

Speaking of Canada Day, the City of Calgary will be putting on their annual Canada Day fireworks show. One of the best viewing spots is the Max Bell Centre, located right off Deerfoot Trail and offering an absolutely amazing view of the city’s skyline. The fireworks are expected to start at 11 p.m., so it’s worth arriving a little earlier to secure a good spot before things fill up.

A new jewellery-making studio has arrived at CF Chinook Centre

The Gem Studio just opened its first Calgary location at CF Chinook Centre, giving you a chance to create your own permanent bracelets this summer. You can go in, pick out a chain, get it welded on and leave with a bracelet that stays on long-term. It’s a simple but fun experience if you’re looking for something a little different to do with friends, especially if you want matching pieces that feel personal to you.

If there’s one time to eat way too many pancakes, it’s Stampede season

If there’s one thing that is a non-negotiable during the Calgary Stampede, it’s the pancake breakfasts. It’s the one time of year when nobody questions eating your body weight in pancakes before noon. Across the city, community groups, businesses and organizations host free breakfasts throughout all 10 days of the Calgary Stampede, making it easy to find one no matter where you are.

Some of the more popular stops this year include the 4th Street Pancake Showdown, where 11 griddles will be on the go, as well as the CF Market Mall breakfast, both drawing big crowds of early-morning Stampede-goers.

A new sushi spot just landed in northwest Calgary

While we’re on the topic of food, Ryuko has opened a new location in Beacon Hill, bringing its modern Japanese menu to northwest Calgary. Known for its sushi, katsu, and beautifully plated dishes, it’s a spot that feels a little more elevated than your usual casual dinner out without being overly formal. The new location keeps the same sleek, minimal vibe the restaurant is known for, making it a solid addition for anyone looking for a new go-to sushi spot in the city.

And that’s your Calgary group chat update for the week. From Stampede breakfast and new food spots to a few openings and events worth checking out, there’s no shortage of things to talk about right now. Whether you’re planning your week or just checking out what’s going on in the city, you’re not officially up to date.
