Stainless steel appliances, like refrigerators and ovens, add a sleek, modern look to your kitchen, but the smooth, shiny surface shows fingerprints, smudges and water spots easily. Stainless steel finishes can also scratch easily, so you have to be careful how you clean them.

Luckily, the internet is here to help. Content creator @rosalynndaniels shared her simple cleaning hack for keeping stainless steel appliances shiny and fingerprint-free, which is especially helpful if you have kids who like to leave little smudges all over your kitchen. (This writer raises her hand.) Here’s what you need to know.

How to Clean Stainless Steel Appliances With Stuff You Have in Your Kitchen

According to Daniels, all you need is a paper towel and some olive oil to get your fridge or oven sparkling clean. Just put a small drizzle of olive oil on the paper towel and, starting at the top of the fridge, wipe it down until all of the fingerprints are gone. Make sure that you go with the grain of the steel so that it looks polished, and don’t add too much oil, which can make the surface feel oily. It’s that simple to get your stainless steel appliances look sparkling and new.

If your fridge or oven requires a little more than a quick polish, use a microfiber cloth because they’re gentle and won’t scratch the surface of your appliance. Spray a 50/50 mixture of vinegar and water onto the appliance, then wipe with the grain for a streak-free shine. After cleaning, you can apply the olive oil or even a small amount of baby oil with a soft cloth or paper towel to protect the surface from fingerprints.

If you have tough stains to remove, make a paste with water and baking soda, rub it gently onto the appliance, and then rinse it off. Then, follow the polishing method to make the appliance shine.
