The Forsytes have spent their entire first season trying to maintain their hard-earned social status in London with their “new money”—and finding that the road up the ladder is much harder to traverse than sliding down it.

Based on the novels written by Nobel Prize-winning author John Galsworthy and led by an exceptional cast, the six-part PBS Masterpiece series has already been picked up for two additional seasons so we’ll see how far The Forsytes must struggle to stay atop the social ladder. But before we get to that, let’s look at the Season 1 finale of The Forsytes below with a Parade exclusive sneak peek!

What Happened in Episode 5 of ‘The Forsytes’?

Irene (Millie Gibson) restarted ballet in Paris, but Soames (Joshua Orpin) not only lied about his father’s health to get her to return to London, but also demanded she accept his controlling, restrictive life. When Irene discovered that she had been lied to, it led to a tense confrontation. Meanwhile, Frances (Tuppence Middleton) tried to erase her husband Jolyon’s (Danny Griffin) past by evicting Louisa (Eleanor Tomlinson), which led Jo to break with Frances and leave home to support his other family. And when a major disaster struck in Ceylon, it caused a collapse in the company’s shares and threatened the financial security of the family firm.
