The God of War TV show is recasting Atreus and Thrud

Prime Video’s troubled God of War TV show adaptation will see even more recasts in its second season, as a new report suggests the studio is looking for new actors to portray Atreus and Thrud.

For God of War’s first season, Sons of Anarchy’s Ryan Hurst was originally set to play Kratos, while Chucky’s Callum Vinson signed on as Atreus and Insidious: Out of the Further’s Island Austin was cast as Thrud. We learned last month that Ryan Hurst sustained an injury while filming the first season and will be replaced by a new actor. Now, a report from MP1st suggests that Atreus and Thrud will have new actors in God of War season 2.

MP1st spotted casting calls from May for the show that matched up with the descriptions previously shared during the casting process for Atreus and Thrud. Prime Video is now looking for actors between the ages of 14 and 17, rather than ones between the ages of 9 and 12.

While the first season of God of War adapts the 2018 game, the second season will cover the events of 2022’s God of War: Ragnarok. There is a time jump between those two games, with Atreus and Thrud playing even more action-heavy roles. It seems the show’s creative team would rather have older actors portray those important characters in the show’s second season than wait for those they already cast to age up.

In the wake of Ryan Hurst’s exit from the show, the decision to recast other main characters raises concerns. How cohesive and consistent the adaptation will feel, and how much production issues will affect the show’s quality? It’s hard to know before seeing any footage of the show, but it’s disappointing that we won’t see Callum Vinson grow into the role of Atreus like Bella Ramsey has with Ellie in The Last of Us.

As of now, it seems like there won’t be any other major recasts for God of War’s first or second seasons. The show’s first episode does not have a premiere date, as filming needs to restart with a new actor portraying Kratos. We do know that God of War Laufey, the next video game in this series, will come out for PS5 on Feb. 16, 2027.
