You can ogle great masterpieces of art through a screen, sure, but nothing beats seeing that famous painting or sculpture up close and in the flesh, right? Wrong!

For the quirky modern art lovers and extremely long-sighted individuals among us, we’ve got some exciting news, as a piece of art is about to be installed on the moon. Yes, the moon

The art in question? A little Swedish cottage. The Swedish MoonHouse (creative, we know) is set to launch from Kennedy Space Centre in Florida on January 15, embarking on a four-month journey through space to land on our natural satellite.

Swedish artist Mikael Genberg (who sent an artwork up to the International Space Station with Sweden’s first astronaut in 2009) is the brains behind this artistic operation. Genberg has worked with the classic red and white Swedish cottage in a lot of his work, sending the little house to the bottom of the ocean and the tops of the trees. But this has to be its most adventurous journey yet.

The project will launch in partnership with Japanese company ispace who are providing their lunar rover (tenacious) and lander (resilience), and livestreaming the launch.

Genberg originally had the idea back in 1999, but as you might have guessed, these things take time. Working out the best spot on the moon for Moonhouse to land has been quite the undertaking, and it’s had to be structurally prepared for the journey.

But now, it seems the work is finally done, and there are even clocks set up around Tokyo counting down to take-off.

‘It’s exciting that something so original and unmistakably Swedish as the little red cottage gets to fly so high and will highlight our Earthly destination for years to come,’ says Susanne Andersson, CEO of Visit Sweden.

We really, really aren’t joking – tune in on ispace’s website on Wednesday, January 15 to see for yourself.
