20 years after The Simpsons Movie, a sequel is underway under the Disney regime.

The announcement came via social media from 20th Century Studios, with a post reading,“Woohoo! The Simpsons are coming to theaters with an all-new movie on July 23, 2027!” The post had an image which features a familiar pink donut with “2” sprinkles alongside the tagline,“Homer’s coming back for seconds.”

Although nothing about the plot is currently known, the new The Simpsons movie will premiere on the same date as the original film, which earned$536 million at the global box office in 2007. The Simpsons Movie, directed by David Silverman, saw Springfield being contained under a massive glass dome after Homer accidentally polluted the town’s lake. It’ll be interesting to see how a Disney-produced Simpsons movie turns out, given the first was made by Fox pre-acquisition, plus all the meta jokes about a 20-year gap under new management.

The Simpsons has already been renewed through its 40th season, set to air in 2028–2029, cementing its run as one of the longest-lasting shows on television.
