Nintendo and Illumination revealed a new trailer for The Super Mario Galaxy Movie on Sunday during a new Nintendo Direct dedicated to the upcoming animated film. And it featured the return of a character Mario fans have been waiting for: Birdo. Yes, Birdo will appear in The Super Mario Galaxy Movie.
But that’s not the only Super Mario character who will play an active role in The Super Mario Galaxy Movie, according to Mario creator Shigeru Miyamoto. Yoshi is here too, joining Mario, Luigi, and the Toad gang after being rescued from the Sand Kingdom, as seen in the movie’s new trailer. (Yoshi was previously leaked by… cookies.)
The Super Mario Galaxy Movie Direct’s trailer reveals more than just Yoshi’s return as teased in The Super Mario Bros. Movie‘s post-credits. It also shows Mario and Peach navigating a deadly series of traps at Bowser’s castle; Luigi acquiring and violently using the Frog Suit; and Yoshi and Toad protecting Baby Mario and Baby Luigi against a T. rex, hinting at more origin story material for the Mario Bros. There are also quite a few Easter eggs in the trailer, including Yoshi wielding a Super Scope 6 and a cameo from a rarely seen Mario enemy.
Yep, Mouser’s in this, joining his Super Mario Bros. 2 brethren Birdo.
Nintendo and Illumination also released a new poster and a slightly revised release date for The Super Mario Galaxy Movie.
The Super Mario Galaxy Movie will bring back The Super Mario Bros. Movie actors Chris Pratt (Mario), Anya Taylor-Joy (Peach), Charlie Day (Luigi), Jack Black (Bowser), Keegan-Michael Key (Toad), and Kevin Michael Richardson (Kamek) reprise their respective roles. New to The Super Mario Galaxy Movie cast are Brie Larson as Rosalina and Benny Safdie as Bowser Jr., respectively.
Nintendo and Illumination’s new Mario movie will help mark the original Super Mario Bros. game’s 40th anniversary. Outside of The Super Mario Galaxy Movie, 2026 will be a big year for Mario and friends; Nintendo has a trio of new releases already confirmed for this year, including Mario Tennis Fever in February, a Nintendo Switch 2 edition of Super Mario Bros. Wonder in March, and a new Yoshi platformer, Yoshi and the Mysterious Book, which will likely arrive sometime after the dinosaur’s big-screen performance.
The Super Mario Galaxy Movie will be released in movie theaters on April 1 (two days earlier than previously announced).
