A significant stretch of Toronto’s key transportation backbone will grind to a halt for the weekend of July 6 and 7, 2024.

The transit agency has announced that there will be no subway service on Line 1 Yonge-University between St. Clair and Sheppard-Yonge stations for the duration of the weekend.

The closure spans a distance of almost 8.2 kilometres of the line’s total 38.4-kilometre length — approximately 21.4 per cent of Line 1.

The TTC attributes this latest closure to planned station improvements and track work.

You won’t be completely out of luck, as Line 1 shuttle buses will operate to cover the six-station gap in service. But It will certainly be a downgrade.

You’ll still be able to pop into most of the affected stations to purchase and reload Presto fares or connect with surface routes.

However, Lawrence Station will be entirely closed for the weekend — dovetailing with a closure of the station’s main entrances beginning this month and set to drag on until mid-2025.

Subway service on Line 1 will fully resume on Monday, July 8, by 6 a.m.
