Some people watch the Big Game to cheer on their favourite football teams. Others are enticed by the half-time show. But, one of the most fun aspects comes via the commercials that premier in the coveted ad slots.
Hellmann’s Canada joins the illustrious advertising lineup for the fifth consecutive year with a new commercial that will appeal to rom-com lovers and sandwich enthusiasts alike, reuniting the stars of an iconic 80s film.
Welcome to Katz’s Deli
Even if you haven’t seen When Harry Met Sally, you’re likely familiar with the famous Katz’s Deli scene, but if not, here’s a recap.
The 1989 rom-com introduces viewers to college graduates Harry and Sally, played by Billy Crystal and Meg Ryan, who argue about whether men and women can be strictly platonic friends, as they share a car ride from Chicago to New York.
As the two build their lives and careers in Manhattan, they find love and heartache — with other people — but their paths continue to cross and their friendship continues to grow over the years, until they decide whether to let their friendship develop into romance.
So where does Katz’s Deli play into this? There’s a scene featuring the two main characters having lunch at Katz’s Delicatessen, a real Jewish deli in Manhattan. The couple are arguing whether or not a man can spot when a woman is faking a…. well, you know, and Sally loudly demonstrates just how easy it is.
A nearby patron then places an order with the waiter, delivering one of the most iconic lines in cinema: “I’ll have what she’s having.”
The perfect pairing
Now, 35 years later, stars Meg Ryan and Billy Crystal reprise their roles as Sally and Harry to reunite in a hilarious recreation of the unforgettable scene. When Sally’s first bite of her sandwich doesn’t quite satisfy, she adds some of Hellmann’s Real Mayonnaise. Let’s just say, the next bite is far more pleasurable.
The full ad will air live in the United States during the Big Game, and a shortened version will appear on Canadian channels starting Feb. 10.

What She’s Having
Recipe ingredients:
- 2 slices of unseeded rye bread
- 2 slices Alpine Swiss cheese
- 1 large beefsteak tomato
- 2 crisp leaves of romaine lettuce
- 1 Half sour dill pickle
- Sliced turkey, all white meat
- Salt and pepper
- The hero ingredient: Hellmann’s Real Mayonnaise
Directions:
- Toast the bread to golden brown perfection
- Add a swirly squeeze of Hellmann’s Real Mayonnaise
- Place one whole green leaf lettuce leaf on the bread
- Then add the sliced turkey, followed by 2 slices of Alpine Swiss cheese
- Add half of a sour pickle, sliced lengthwise so every bite has a bit of pickle
- Then place 3 slices of tomato, cut paper thin
- Add Kosher salt and cracked pepper to taste
- Top with 2nd lettuce leaf
- Add another generous squeeze of Hellmann’s on 2nd piece of toast
- Place on top of lettuce
- Enjoy!
