First, there was the cucumber craze of 2024, and now…apples are having a moment? Yup. Social media has gone crazy in the past month or so with the newest viral recipe trend that starts with “Sometimes you have to eat an entire (fill in the blank with your favorite fruit or vegetable).” The trend was popularized by Logan Moffitt (@logagm), who frequently eats an entire cucumber, whether that be in his kitchen, on a jet ski or while bobbing around in a lake.

And with fall well on the way, cucumbers seem to be giving way to apples, with TikToker Sara Hargrove (@sarahargrove_) whipping up an apple salad in a plastic quart container—and the internet immediately took note. “Cucumber salad is brat summer, apple salad is demure autumn,” proclaimed one TikToker. With an endorsement like that how could we not give it a try? Here’s what you need to know—and how things went when we made the viral apple salad in our kitchen.

What is the Viral Apple Salad?

TikTok is taking an entire sliced apple and putting it in a quart container (a must-have for this trend) along with Greek yogurt, some peanut butter, honey, a dash of cinnamon and chopped pecans. Sara has a raspberry goat cheese version and a s’mores version, among others, on her TikTok page. The broader TikTok universe has taken note of the trend and has made variations with apples, marshmallow fluff and peanut butter; cream cheese, brown sugar, vanilla and cinnamon; and pumpkin purée, cinnamon and marshmallow fluff.

How Do You Make the Viral Apple Salad?

For the very traditional fall-inspired recipe, begin by thinly slicing your apple and placing it in a quart container (I used a glass jar with a lid) along with a heaping scoop of Greek yogurt (3 ounces or so) a dash of cinnamon, squirt of honey and some melted peanut butter (about 2 tablespoons). Give it a good shake to make sure all the apples are coated, then remove the lid and dig in with chopsticks (also a mainstay of this trend). It’s a crispy, creamy fall dessert that’s high in protein and also portable.

What I Thought About the Viral Apple Salad

Honestly, I’m still not over the entire cucumber recipe because all of the variations I tried were quite delicious, but I was really excited to try this variation too. And like most TikTok recipes I’ve tried, I was intrigued, excited and not at all disappointed. In fact, I think this just might be a go-to snack or dessert when I’m looking for creative uses for all of those apples that I will inevitably pick at the orchard.

It was crunchy, cool and refreshing with just the right amount of sweetness and a surprising amount of protein from Greek yogurt and peanut butter. It reminded me of ambrosia—the juicy fruit mixed with a creamy dressing and bits of crunchy nuts—and it hit the spot. This really does make an awesome snack, breakfast or dessert and I could see customizing it to my liking with so many other things—a sprinkle of chia seeds, hemp seeds or even a scoop of granola on top. I’ll be scouring the internet for more versions because this is a keeper. What’s the saying? An apple a day? Yeah, I think I can handle that.
