While some might feel that soup season is year-round, fall is when soup weather really kicks into high gear. We never shy away from a hot bowl of chicken noodle or Martha Stewart’s classic breakfast soup, and it wouldn’t be right to pass up an upgraded potato or tomato soup.

The possibilities of what can be done with soup are endless, and some of our favorite recipes have been a product of some very creative thinking. We recently came across recipe developer @erinliveswhole and her Easy Frozen Wonton Soup. After watching the video we grabbed our keys and headed to the store for frozen dumplings. Here’s what you need to know to try it in your kitchen.

What You Need to Make Wonton Soup with Frozen Dumplings

There’s a lot of chatter in the comments about the distinction between wontons and dumplings. Generally speaking, wontons have a thinner wrapper than dumplings, but they can be used interchangeably in this recipe. You can use whatever frozen wontons or dumplings you prefer.

Whatever you use, it’s likely going to be delicious, as Erin all but guarantees. “This soup is literally the best because it has only a handful of ingredients, comes together in no time and is SO delicious,” Erin captions her video, “it’s so easy and so absolutely good.”

Erin uses frozen mini chicken wontons from Trader Joe’s, but you can use whatever brand and filling combo you prefer. You can customize the recipe as you like, but her ingredients list includes frozen dumplings, sesame oil, scalions, garlic, ginger, carrots, soy sauce, chicken broth, spinach and chili crisp and sesame seeds for topping.

How to Make Wonton Soup with Frozen Dumplings

First, heat a large pan over medium-high heat with sesame oil. Cook the scallions, garlic and ginger in the oil, then stir in the carrots, soy sauce and chicken broth. Bring the mixture to a boil and then add your dumplings and spinach. Cook until the dumplings are cooked through, which will probably take 5 minutes or so. Serve topped with more scallions, chili crisp and sesame seeds.

Commenters were quick to hop in with some of their favorite variations on this dish. “I use pork bouillon, cabbage and baby bok Choi,” one viewer added, “so many delicious variations.” Another viewer chimed in, saying “I use the chicken and cilantro dumplings from Costco,” while some else reported using “snow peas and garlic in mine.”

We can also imagine making an easy vegetarian version with veggie dumplings and vegetable stock, plus our favorite mix of winter greens—maybe dandelion greens, boy choy and kale? We love a recipe that inspires us to make it our own!
