Frontmezzjunkies reports: Winners of the 25th Annual Broadway.com Audience Choice Awards Announced

By Ross

Broadway.com announced yesterday the winners of the 25th annual Broadway.com Audience Choice Awards, the only major theatrical awards where the nominating jury and voting committee are made up entirely of regular Broadway fans.

To no one’s surprise, the film-to-stage, horror-comedy-musical  Death Becomes Her wins six awards, becoming the most awarded show, taking the prize for Favorite New Musical, Favorite Leading Actress in a Musical for star Megan Hilty, and Favorite Onstage Pair for Hilty and Jennifer Simard.

It’s also not a surprise that the much-adored Kit Connor, who made his Broadway debut most wonderfully in Sam Gold’s Romeo + Juliet, was the most awarded performer overall, winning three awards, including Leading Actor in a Play category. His co-star Rachel Zegler, whom I personally didn’t think rose to the occasion as much as Connor, won Leading Actress in a Play, while the play itself, directed by Sam Gold, was named Favorite Play Revival, taking in a total of five awards.

Cole Escola also led his play, Oh, Mary!to victory as Broadway.com readers’ Favorite New Play, while director Jamie Lloyd’s radically reimagined Sunset Blvd took home the award for Favorite Musical Revival. But I must add that although I loved, loved, loved Jonathan Groff in Just In Time, I’m not sure I would have named him Best Funny Performance. Hello Cole, Megan, and Jennifer. But I am thrilled that he won an award, as he is utterly spectacular in this new musical.

The Broadway.com Audience Choice Awards celebration will take place on May 29. Check out the full list of winners below.
