Theatre Calgary has revealed casting for its spring production of Legally Blonde, running from May 20 to June 15 at the Max Bell Theatre.

Based on the beloved 2001 film (as well as the novel by Amanda Brown), the fast-paced musical follows fashion-savvy Elle Woods as she trades her sorority life for Harvard Law School in an attempt to win back her ex — only to end up discovering her own strengths and smarts.

Taking on the role of Elle is Calgary’s Kelsey Verzotti, a familiar face to Theatre Calgary audiences from A Christmas Carol (2024) and Mary and Max: A New Musical (2023).

Joining Verzotti is Daniel Fong as Emmett, Kaden Brett Forsberg as Warner, Chelsea Woodard as Vivienne, and Patricia Zentilli as Paulette. Jessica Jones, Layne Labbe, and Maya Baker round out Elle’s trio of sorority friends as Pilar, Serena, and Margot, respectively.

The cast also features Sarah Horsman, Jameela McNeil, Dean Stockdale, John Ullyatt, Robyn Ord, Gunho Kwak, and Nikko Angelo Hinayo.

On the canine side of things, Mojave returns to Theatre Calgary — following an appearance in Lady Day at Emerson’s Bar and Grill (2022) — as Elle’s beloved chihuahua, Bruiser. Fergus Finnegan Skellington, a pit bull, takes on the role of Rufus.

Directed and choreographed by Stephanie Graham, the production features music direction by Rachel Cameron and design by Beyata Hackborn (set), Rebecca Toon (costumes), Renée Brode (lighting), and Joshua D. Reid (sound).

“There is something about Elle Woods we identify with,” wrote Graham in a press release. “Most of us have been underestimated at some point in our lives, and we celebrate that Elle doesn’t need to fundamentally change who she is to succeed. Elle reminds me to always lead with kindness — and it’s a dream come true to get to live in her orbit for a while.”

Legally Blonde runs at Theatre Calgary from May 20 to June 15, and at Edmonton’s Citadel Theatre from July 5 to August 3.
