Chappell Roan did more than turn heads at last night’s Grammy Awards. She dropped jaws.

Never one to miss out on making a bold fashion statement, the 27-year-old singer/songwriter arrived at the Crypto Arena in Los Angeles wearing a barely-there, wine-hued Mugler gown that appeared to be hanging from a pair of nipple piercings.

Taking the ensemble to another level, she wore a sheer under-layer showing off intricate, full-body tattoos.

However, according to Roan’s makeup artist, Andrew Dahling, per Marie Claire, Roan’s “Mugler medieval fantasy” look bore a couple secrets: It was actually affixed with prosthetic nipples and featured tons of faux ink.

“There was so much going on — the tattoos, the prosthetic nipples, all of it, but overall we wanted everything to feel cohesive and really honor the dress and the medieval world we were living in,” Dahling said.

Styled by Genesis Webb, Roan’s wild look was designed to push boundaries. We’ll leave it to Vanity Fair to really dissect the look and reveal its hidden meaning.

“The dress is a contemporary recreation by Castro Freitas of a haute couture set that the late Manfred Thierry Mugler showed on the runway for his eponymous label back in 1998,” Vanity Fair explained. “On that runway, the silk slip was suspended from the models’ very real nipple rings. It is a classic Mugler piece that made a splash back then, which it did once more tonight.”

Though Roan’s red-carpet look was one of the most-buzzed-about topics of last night’s awards show, the artist changed looks before presenting the award for Best New Artist.

The second look (seen above in the hero image) was a demure goddess gown meant to highlight “shape to the eyes — glamour, glitz, metallics in strategic places to make her eyes pop,” Dahling said. “Cool tones, lots of cool tones — lavenders.”

Roan herself was nominated for Best Pop Solo Performance (which went to Lola Young) and Record of the Year (which went to Kendrick Lamar with SZA) for her latest hit, “The Subway.”

Of course, the “Pink Pony Club” princess wasn’t the only stunner strutting the carpet. Heidi Klum, dressed in the tightest little Marina Hoermanseder latex naked dress; Teyana Taylor, in sparkly Tom Ford; and Kehlani, in a sheer black gown by Valdrin Sahiti, all got the au naturel memo and looked out of this world.
