If a scenic outdoor adventure is what you’re looking for, we have just the thing to scratch that itch. Have you heard of the Lafarge 2000 trail? Well, it’s a lengthy excursion in Ontario that guides you past unique, natural wonders like swamps, valleys, lakes and even waterfalls. And it’s about an hour away from Toronto.

Hop in that car and head on west towards Hamilton, Ontario. If the traffic isn’t as bad as it tends to be, you might make it just under an hour.

According to Conservation Hamilton, the trail is a joint project between the City of Hamilton and the Hamilton Conservation Authority.

It’s truly a gem that offers scenic views of natural wonders we love. The Beverly Swamp, Dundas Valley, and Christie Lake Conservation Area are just some of the sights you can see.

“The Lafarge 2000 Trail follows Middletown Road from Regional Road 99, just off the Hamilton to Brantford Rail Trail, and continues out to the border between the City of Hamilton and the Township of Puslinch,” shares the HCA. It’s part of an “extensive system of trails” that link to what they call “the natural wonders of Southern Ontario.” That includes the Niagara Escarpment, HCA conservation areas, Lake Ontario, and neighbouring municipalities.

You’ll find that the trail consists of both on-road and off-road sections, so be aware of your surroundings as you head out on your journey.

Where do I start?

Conservation Hamilton suggests beginning your adventure in the Dundas Valley. There’s a parking lot here, off Old Highway 99, east of Hwy. 52, making it much more accessible for eager hikers.

As you set forth on your journey, it’s described as a “slow and steady climb” out of the valley and right into the scenic countryside. The trail will then take you over a section of the Christie Lake reservoir. Here’s where you’ll get a wonderful view of the reservoir on the east side and wildlife management area to the west.

And as you make your way along the trail, you’ll have the chance to visit some of the area’s gorgeous natural sites. We’re talking Webster’s Falls, Valens Conservation Area, Crooks’ Hollow, Beverly Swamp, Fletcher Creek Ecological Preserve and Westfield Heritage Village.

As previously mentioned, it’s a 22 km long trail, so if you’re eager to hop on this journey and go back to your car, come prepared.

It’s an all-season experience that you must try at least once – especially if you’re in your walking era!

Now, all that’s left for you to do is plan a day and head on out. Enjoy the outdoors.
