Did you know that Ontario is home to a blue-green lake that’s so rare, it’s different than its kind? Looks like a trip to Crawford Lake is in order and here’s what to know.
Just a short drive away from Toronto is Milton, Ontario. Here’s where you’ll find Crawford Lake Conservation Area and according to Ontario Conservation Areas, it has drawn people to its shores for hundreds of years.
This stunning lake is surrounded by a stunning boardwalk, nestled within lush forests atop the Niagara Escarpment.
But it’s not just any lake – it’s a rare meromictic lake, according to Ontario Conservation Areas.
Why is Crawford Lake so rare?
This lake shimmers with bright blue and green hues. It’s actually one of the very few meromictic lakes in Canada, where different layers of water don’t intermix, creating a mesmerizing sight.
Per OCA, this can be partially due to the lake’s shape but combined with its chemistry, it “causes sediment to settle in alternating light and dark layers, called varves, in the deepest part of the lake.”
“The bottom waters of meromictic lakes are usually anoxic (meaning that they contain no dissolved oxygen),” they add.
Since Crawford Lake’s full water column is oxygenated, it makes it exceptionally rare among the other meromictic lakes.
Is swimming allowed in the lake?
We’ll cut to the chase – no. It’s an ecologically sensitive area, according to Conservation Halton.
Pets are asked to be kept on leashes while at the park to prevent them from entering the waters/
The same thing goes for fishing and boating – not allowed.
Do I need to make a reservation?
Though it’s not necessary, they are recommended. Book in advance and secure your spot. You’ll also save on gate fees – it’s a win/win.
