From lakes and rivers to towns and bustling cities, there is so much to see and do in Alberta, but Kananaskis is one of the most magical.

Here, mountains make up the backdrop and trees tower over hiking trails, but what if you’re looking for something to get your heart racing?

Hidden deep within Peter Lougheed Provincial Park, the Blackshale Suspension Bridge overlooks a dense forest and wildlife below.

It might not be as extreme as skydiving or bungee jumping, but those prone to height-induced butterflies will likely feel a flutter.

How to get there

In search of the bridge? To get to Blackshale, you’ll first have to take a beautiful drive through the Rockies.

Located 90 minutes from Banff, this hike can be accessed from the Black Prince Parking Lot, but you’ll have to keep your eyes open!

“The Black Shale Suspension Bridge trail does not have an official trailhead,” Explore Kananaskis writes about the Alberta gem.

“You’ll know that you’ve gone 200 m too far if you spot the Peninsula Day Use Area. Parking is accessible in the Mount Black Prince parking lot. The Peninsula trailhead is found on the east side of the highway.”

Once you’re headed in the right direction, prepare to trek 7 km among friends. ‘

Because this hike is suitable for most (including dogs as long as they’re on a leash), it gets pretty busy in the warmer months.

In addition to people on foot, mountain bikers frequent this trail, but don’t let this deter you.

With a backpack of snacks, patients, a camera, and some good company, it’ll all be worth it.

“The suspension bridge may be the highlight of the hike, but the slow, elevated climb to the top can also be appreciated as the forest teems with life and colour,” they continued.

“The trek to the suspension bridge lasts 3 km, enough to build anticipation for the picturesque scenes. The bridge slopes through an open awning in the heart of the forest, allowing you to take in the rugged architecture of Mother Nature.”

Interested? The trail is closed in the winter but opens in May. Our advice? In the meantime, check out the Kananaskis free park days for 2025.

Before heading out, always check the weather and trail reports and fill up on water before you go!

You’re going to have a blast, Alberta.

Enjoy!
