Wild Rose Country is a treasure trove of natural wonders, but if you’re itching for adventure, you’ll need to tighten your shoe laces. While there’s plenty to see from behind the wheel or in photos, there’s nothing like an Alberta trail to fill a morning, afternoon, or entire weekend.

From wildlife to wildflowers, there is no shortage of unforgettable things to see and do in and around the province, but Hoodoo Creek is among some of the coolest experiences.

What’s special about the Hoodoo Creek Trail?

Located just outside of Nordegg, this 3.8 km trek (round trip) will lead you deep into a rugged valley.

While en route, fun seekers will weave through trees, scramble up creek beds, and even duck into a shallow cave — but that’s hardly all.

Travellers will also pass by several hoodoos, a rocky reminder of what once was.

“Hoodoos like the ones you’ll see on this hike are evidence of the glaciers that once covered the area. As they advanced and retreated over the region, they carried rocks of various size and deposited them along the way,” explains Nordegg Adventures.

“The deposit, called till, contained a mixture of clay, sand fragments and occasionally large rocks. In some cases like here, the calcium carbonate in the limestone cemented the deposits together.”

As the water eroded, what was left were uniquely shaped pillars that line the trail.

Sound exciting? It gets better.

As you wander, you’ll also want to keep your eyes peeled for an impressive view of Abraham Lake, a bright blue beauty along the David Thompson Highway.

How to get there

If you think you’re ready to kick up some dust, prepare for a moderate journey with 360 metres of elevation gain.

If you think you can handle it, the trailhead can be found 2.8 kms west of the Windy Point Access on Highway 11.

A green sign marks the pathway pointing you in the direction of magic.

There aren’t many places quite like it, Alberta, so soak it all in.

You’re in for a treat.
