Just a stone’s throw from Canada’s Tall Tree Capital, Fairy Lake in British Columbia is definitely a spot worth seeing for yourself. So the next time you’re heading to southern Vancouver Island, make sure to bookmark this!

The lake might be popular for swimming and camping during the warmer months, but there’s a fascinating natural wonder growing in the middle of the lake that’s worth a visit in itself!

According to accommodation service Wild Renfrew, there’s a tiny “Bonsai” tree growing out of a sunken log. Visitors can get an up-close look by paddling to the middle of the lake, or take in the views from a sandy beach.

Despite its appearance, the small, lone tree is not actually a Bonsai at all – but rather a Douglas Fir that’s growing atop another Douglas Fir. For many, the natural wonder has become a symbol of a “window into nature and rebirth,” according to Wild Renfrew.

If you’re up for a trip to a remote location near Port Renfrew this fall, you’ll be rewarded with many opportunities for exploration.

This includes beachcombing at the famed Botanical Beach and traversing through ancient rainforests. Oh, and roaming two of the most beloved coastal trailheads in the world – The West Coast Trail and Juan de Fuca Marine Trail!

Note that the Port Renfrew Visitor Centre is now closed until May 2025 but there will still be wifi nearby if you’re planning a visit during the fall or winter months.

So there you have it, BC! If you happen to be in the Port Renfrew area sometime this fall, it’s worth adding Fairy Lake

Stay tuned for more fascinating natural wonders!
