Travelling by train is back, we know that. There’s no better way to maximise your holiday than by incorporating a particularly dazzling railway route as part of your journey.
But which train journeys are considered the greatest on the planet? We have our own ideas, and so does the Telegraph. The newspaper called on several contributors to compile a list of all their favourite train journeys.
The Heart of Wales line makes the list, which is a 193 km route journeying from south Wales through Shropshire, connecting the Welsh Marches and passing by places such as Llandeilo, Sugarloaf Hill and the viaducts at Cynghordy and Knucklas. Sounds lovely and quaint, doesn’t it?
Then at the other end of the scale, the gargantuan Trans-Siberian Express, a 9,289 km, eight-day journey into the Arctic Circle was included, as was a journey from Khambli to Marwar Junction in India that one writer took back in the 1980s, which they described as a ‘magnificent ride of several hours across 172 bridges and through tunnels that are feats of engineering dating back a century.’
