Here’s what you should know before lacing up your hiking boots.

Getting there

You’ll start your journey at the famous Cave and Basin Historical Site, about a 2 km walk from downtown Banff.

Follow the paved trail and within a few minutes, you’ll be treated to the first of many gorgeous views. Enjoy a mountain panorama that looks across the Bow River before continuing on a gentle and steady climb.

The paved section of the path ends at the canyon, where you’ll have a moderately difficult trail loop through the water-filled canyon.

What to expect

The trail length is approximately 3.7 km one way, plus the additional 1.6 km loop. It takes most hikers about 3 hours to complete a round trip — but with views like these, why hurry?

If you don’t mind missing out on the loop, Travel Alberta says you can opt to bike or rollerblade along the paved pathway. The scenery is still stunning, so choose your own adventure.

As always, make sure to check the Alberta Parks website before you go for the most up-to-date trail conditions and advisories.

Dress appropriately, pack something to snack on, and have fun out there!

Oh, and keep an eye out for wildlife. It’s their home, after all.
