With the long weekend coming up, you might already be on the hunt for the perfect spontaneous day trip from Vancouver. And while Boya Lake is definitely more of a longer road trip, situated at the northernmost part of British Columbia – it’s worth adding to your summer bucket list nonetheless.

With crystal-clear, aquamarine waters that are unusually warm for the north, Boya Lake at Tā Ch’ilā Park is as dreamy as they come.

While the weather in Vancouver is less than ideal for swimming at the moment – it won’t be long before summer temps are back!

The provincial park is situated on Liard Plain, which was carved out by ancient glaciers 20,000 years ago. Today, the stunning lake is surrounded by elongated eskers (ridges) and rolling hills that make for the perfect backdrop for your next lake day.

Boya Lake is also home to ‘limitless’ bays and islands, according to BC Parks, making it an ideal spot to explore via kayak or canoe.

The bottom of the lake consists of marl – a mixture of silt and shell fragments – that reflect the sun and give its waters their beautiful colour and shine.

So if you’re up for a bit of a trek, it’s well worth the trip to experience swimming here for yourself!

Park amenities

In terms of hiking and exploring, the park has two short hiking trails to offer, as well as a marked mountain bike trail.

There’s also an adventure playground and first-come-first-served, vehicle-accessible campsites to check out.

So, if you’re looking to carve out your own slice of paradise in British Columbia this summer, it’s time to put Boya Lake on your map.

Happy swimming!
