What Type of Sugar Does Starbucks Use in the Coconut Milk Latte?

Just a note, Starbucks uses a sugar called cascara. It’s a rare sugar that’s actually from a coffee bean. It’s hard to find anywhere, so after tasting theirs, I found coconut or turbinado/demerara sugar tastes very similar and is the perfect substitute. After you make this, sit down, relax and enjoy every last warm sip.

Ingredients

  • 6 to 8 ounces brewed coffee or espresso, regular or decaf
  • ½ cup coconut milk, from a can or refrigerated coconut milk
  • 1 tablespoon coconut sugar or turbinado sugar, any coarse brown sugar will work too
  1. Brew a cup of coffee or espresso.
  2. While that’s going, steam the coconut milk: pour it into a glass jar or mason jar. Put the lid on and shake for about 30 seconds. Take the lid off (this is very important!) and place the open jar into the microwave for 20 seconds. Take it out to see if it’s warm; if not, put it back in for 10 seconds.
  3. Grab your coffee, add one teaspoon of the sugar to the cup and mix well. Now, pour the steamed milk right over the coffee. Don’t stir. It should sit right on top. Take the remaining sugar and spoon it right over the frothed milk (as seen in the photo above). That’s it! Easy-peasy, delish!
