For the ultimate scenic experience, you’ll want to hop aboard the Mountaineer, which Conway Scenic Railroad says is its most iconic excursion. This “supremely scenic” trip takes you on a 4-5.5 hour journey through the Mount Washington Valley and over the rugged Crawford Notch.

As you ride in 1950s-style passenger cars, you’ll get to soak up views of the Saco River, cross towering viaducts, and weave through rocky cliffs and crags at the top of the notch. You’ll also cross over several famous bridges including the curved Frankenstein Trestle and the towering Willey Brook Bridge.

Whether you’re a railway enthusiast or not, the train itself is also a big part of the experience. The passenger cars are designed to recreate the post-WWII transcontinental train journeys, complete with deluxe upper dome seating if you want to ride in style and experience panoramic views (for an extra cost, naturally). You can even add a lunch option if you want to snack while soaking up the golden foliage.

If you’d prefer a shorter trip, there’s also the Sawyer River Excursion, which clocks in at just over 2 hours. Many of these train rides run daily throughout October and into November, meaning you have plenty of opportunities to catch the fall foliage at its peak. However, be sure to check availability and dates online before setting off from Montreal as trips do often sell out.
