If you’re looking for a dreamy fall adventure that feels straight out of a storybook, this scenic train ride near Montreal is calling your name.

Just a road trip south of the city, the Conway Scenic Railroad in New Hampshire is the perfect way to soak up the fall colours in all their glory. Think vibrant reds, oranges, and gold as you glide through stunning landscapes aboard a vintage train. It’s like stepping back in time, with the added bonus of breathtaking views that only get better as the leaves change!

Nestled in the heart of the Mount Washington Valley, this cozy train ride (think Harry Potter vibes) is less than four hours from Montreal, making it a doable and worthwhile road trip or weekend getaway.

If you’re craving a comfy yet exciting way to embrace the best of the autumn colours (no hike required), Conway Scenic Railroad has you covered with several different options, each one more picturesque than the last.

For the ultimate scenic experience, you’ll want to hop aboard the Mountaineer, which Conway Scenic Railroad says is its most iconic excursion. This “supremely scenic” trip takes you on a 4-5.5 hour journey through the Mount Washington Valley and over the rugged Crawford Notch.

As you ride in 1950s-style passenger cars, you’ll get to soak up views of the Saco River, cross towering viaducts, and weave through rocky cliffs and crags at the top of the notch. You’ll also cross over several famous bridges including the curved Frankenstein Trestle and the towering Willey Brook Bridge.

Whether you’re a railway enthusiast or not, the train itself is also a big part of the experience. The passenger cars are designed to recreate the post-WWII transcontinental train journeys, complete with deluxe upper dome seating if you want to ride in style and experience panoramic views (for an extra cost, naturally). You can even add a lunch option if you want to snack while soaking up the golden foliage.

If you’d prefer a shorter trip, there’s also the Sawyer River Excursion, which clocks in at just over 2 hours. You’ll still get the charming river views and historic vibes as you ride vintage cars along this historic route. It’s quite a bit shorter than the Mountaineer but still packs in plenty of picturesque moments, especially as the train crosses over scenic bridges en route.

If two hours still sounds too long, the Conway Valley Train journey is only 55 minutes long and covers 11 miles. You’ll ride through peaceful rural landscapes and even get to watch the locomotive switch ends of the train for the return trip—an old-school touch that adds to the charm of the whole experience.

Many of these train rides run daily throughout October and into November, meaning you have plenty of opportunities to catch the fall foliage at its peak. However, be sure to check availability and dates online before setting off from Montreal as trips do often sell out.

Prices range depending on the experience you choose, with adult tickets for the Mountaineer starting at $83 and going up to $198 for deluxe seating. The Sawyer River Excursion is a bit more budget-friendly, starting at $54, and the Conway Valley Train is the most affordable, with prices as low as $24 for coach class and $31 for first class.

So, grab a cozy sweater, pack your camera, and get ready to experience New England’s most vibrant fall landscapes from the vintage comfort of a train carriage. Dreamy!
