In the height of winter, things can get a little dim and grim here in Calgary. Fear not — this free festival is bringing all the best outdoor activities to you, and it’s bound to make you fall in love with the season all over again.

It’ll be a fun-filled event for all over the family day weekend at Pioneer Ranch, with carnival games, sleigh rides, bonfires, snowshoeing, ice fishing, skating, and more to beat the winter blues and fill your cup.

Crimson Lake Winterfest will also bring the Freezin’ For A Reason Polar Bear Dip, shining a light on and raising funds for important local charities. You can sign up to take part in the dip, but you’ll be responsible for collecting and donating pledges directly to the charity of your choice.

The plunge starts at 1 p.m., on February 14, and in between you can liven things up with the whole family, on skates, sleighs, and snowshoes. It’s guaranteed to be the most fun you can have outside of the house this winter!

What to expect

This Valentine’s Day is going to be especially frosty for those attending Crimson Lake Winterfest, a free family-friendly event that’s dedicated to Canada’s most beloved winter activities.

You’ll have the opportunity to skate, cross-country ski, ice fish, watch a chainsaw carving demo, ride a one-horse open sleigh, and take part in fun carnival games. It’s all completely free, and just a two and a half hour drive from the city. Enjoy stunning views of the snow-covered prairies on the way there, with natural phenomena like glittering hoarfrost making things even more exquisite on the right day.

Once you arrive, you’ll be greeted with a variety of fantastic, wintery activities, so you can try your hand at a little bit of everything. You’ll also cheer on the brave souls participating in the Freezin’ For A Reason Polar Dip, which includes a dunk in Crimson Lake.

If you’re not chill enough to take the plunge, that’s okay. Snowsuits are encouraged at this winter festival near Calgary, so come prepared! Make this your family’s Valentine’s Day escape and try something new on the ice this winter—you might love it.
