This globally recognized lake is an Alberta gem with a ton of wildlife & a scenic boardwalk

In the summertime, there’s nothing better than fresh air, a beautiful view, and a leisurely stroll.

If you’re among the many eager to get out and stay out while the sun is in the sky, consider heading to Big Lake in Louis Hole Centennial Provincial Park, where the boardwalk is long and the wildlife is aplenty!

Located just outside St. Albert, this area is an Alberta gem that has been globally recognized as an “Important Bird Area.”

According to Ducks Unlimited Canada, this is because it provides critical habitat for thousands of birds and is a great place for people to learn and interact with nature.

“At the site, DUC has established a forest trail, a wetland boardwalk with interpretive signs and critter dipping stations with the goal of providing hands-on wetland and environmental education, interpretation and exploration,” they explain.

“JEP is also connected to the City of St. Albert’s established nature trail system.”

Those who visit are encouraged to lace up their shoes, be respectful, and keep their eyes open for the many critters who call the lake home.

“More than 235 bird species have been recorded at Big Lake, with some 180 recorded annually,” the city of St. Albert says on their website.

“Lands surrounding Big Lake provide important habitat for Moose, White-tailed Deer, Beaver, Muskrat, Mink, Skunk, Coyote, Red Fox, Porcupine, Snowshoe Hare, and Red Squirrel”.
