Wiarton Willie is the most popular groundhogin Canada. And once again, we’re nearing the annual celebration of Groundhog Day. If you want to celebrate and see the famous predictor for yourself, the town of Wiarton is hosting a one-of-a-kind event for all to enjoy.

It’ll take you about three hours to drive up to Wiarton, Ont., but if you’re looking for an adventure this winter, it’s worth the trip.

What to expect

Every Groundhog Day, which happens to be Feb. 2, everyone sets their eyes on Wiarton Willie, the town’s famed groundhog. The question on everyone’s mind is whether he will cast a shadow, which means we’re in for six more weeks of winter, or whether we will get an early spring.

You can wait like everyone else to hear the news online, or you can make a day of it and see it all go down for yourself.

Festivities will take place at Bluewater Park with a morning display of fireworks at 7 a.m. Now that’s something new. Entertainment will then continue with Bruce Power, Prediction Morning fun and their MC, along with a visit from the Shadow Cabinet and Dignitaries.

The morning will also include free swag from the Town and sponsors, along with free breakfast sandwiches served by the Peninsula Shores District School parents, and hot beverages courtesy of MNP. All while supplies last.

“The tradition of Wiarton Willie has captivated hearts for generations, drawing visitors and media attention from far and wide,” shares the town. “Join us in Wiarton as we come together to witness this age-old tradition, celebrating the quirks and wonders of nature with enthusiasm and joy.”

And then for the big finale — the highly anticipated prediction. You’ll want to head to the former Sobey’s parking lot at 370 William St., to see the prediction take place, at 8:07 a.m., according to the town.

So, will Willie see his shadow and predict six more weeks of winter, or can we keep our fingers crossed for an early spring?

We’ll just have to wait and see!

When: Feb. 2, 2026
