Fall is just around the corner, and it calls for outdoor walks past storybook-like vistas. Sounds specific, we know, but that just so happens to be the case for Ball’s Falls Conservation Area. Within its scenic surroundings, just a short trail adventure away are two majestic waterfalls. Here’s what to know.
Ball’s Falls
Located in Lincoln, Ont., this area is renowned for its breathtaking natural beauty. It’s a showstopper and we love it.
According to Tourism Niagara, the conservation area spreads over 200 acres and features structures dating back to the 19th century, where a small village once stood. It was home to the Ball family, who both lived and worked on the land.
Chasing waterfalls
In addition to the beautiful Niagara escarpment views and gorge, the conservation area has two waterfalls – the upper and lower falls.
It’s a popular adventure amongst nature lovers and photographers! Watch as the Twenty Mile Creek trickles over both the upper and lower falls and tumbles over high cliffs.
“Since the Twenty Mile Creek is rain-fed, the character of the falls can change dramatically with the seasons, from a raging torrent in the spring to a thin veil in late summer and fall,” shares the Niagara Peninsula Conservation Authority.
But to see them, you’ll need to embark on a hike.
Just a short hike
Take a trip down the Cataract Trail, which leads to both waterfalls.
Head to the upper falls and watch the water trickle down from a lookout, or hike to the bottom and get up close and personal (at a safe distance).
“The trail is a bit rocky and has a few obstacles along the way but the view from the bottom is worth the trouble. Alongside the main waterfall, tiny trails of water flow down from cracks in the escarpment, giving a mini waterfall effect,” shares Visit Niagara.
Make your way to Lower Falls, where you’ll also walk past historic buildings that’ll transport you back in time.
However, don’t wait too long to pay this beautiful spot a visit! Though the waterfall may not be as heavy compared to mid-summer months, it is still a sight to see.
