Hiking adventures that lead to the most stunning views in Ontario? Count us in — especially this fall! If you’re in the same boat and looking for a little hiking challenge, this trail in Ontario is just the thing. Nipigon River Recreation Trail leads you to stunning heights and panoramic views of the world’s largest freshwater lake.
Nipigon River Recreation Trail
Your journey awaits in the Thunder Bay region. Make your way towards Lake Superior National Marine Conservation Area, which is about a 13-hour drive from Toronto.
There, you’ll find one of the most rewarding hikes in the province.
How long is the Nipigon River trail?
The Nipigon River Recreation Trail spans 10.1 km, which could take an estimated three to five hours to hike. If you’re an avid hiker, you may be able to finish it faster.
According to Parks Canada, it’s considered a challenging trail due to its length; however, it is suitable for individuals aged eight and above.
What can I expect on the trail?
The trail guides you along the “shoreline of the Nipigon River from Nipigon to Red Rock and along Nipigon Bay on Lake Superior, the world’s largest freshwater lake.”
Here you’ll find several clifftop lookout points with the best panoramic views. This trail is well-maintained, rugged and has a few Parks Canada red chairs along the way.
Lookout points
Of course, you don’t have to embark on the entire trail to reach one of the clifftop lookout points. You can opt to walk down the Red Rock Trailhead instead.
This is a shorter, 40-minute hike that leads to a viewing platform at Lloyd’s Lookout.
There’s also the Nipigon Marina trailhead — two to three km of flat terrain along the edge of the Nipigon River.
However, if you are ready to face the challenge, Parks Canada recommends starting at the Red Rock Trailhead.
Your next adventure awaits!
