There’s a wonderful town located in the heartland of Ontario’s southwest. It’s full of history, stunning beauty, and Canada’s first cheese playground. Intrigued? We sure are! Ingersoll, Ontario should be on your radar and here’s what to know.

Within the area of Oxford County is Ingersoll. If you’re looking for a day trip, or perhaps an overnight getaway, Ingersoll has a few attractions to look out for. One of them being its Cheese playground.

According to Tourism Oxford, right behind the Ingersoll Cheese & Agricultural Museum is where you’ll find this cheese-themed playground.

It was built by a local community group and area children with the help of Giver TV.

“Children can climb over and through slices of cheese, play in a giant sandbox and spin on a wheel of blue cheese,” shares the tourism site.

“This is a great stop for families wanting to stretch their legs and relax in under the shade of a big maple tree.”

As for the Ingersoll Cheese & Agricultural Museum, it has over 20,000 artifacts on display.

If you’re loving this cheese journey, you’d love to know that the current location of what once was the James Harris Cheese Factory, back in 1865 is now the Elm Hurst Inn & Spa.

It has been a landmark in the area since 1872, according to the establishment.

It combines “historic charm and scenic beauty with the modern amenities today’s travellers have come to expect from a premier boutique hotel.”

According to the Inn & Spa, this is the “birthplace of the Canadian commercial cheese industry.” James Harris, who founded the factory on the grounds, went on to produce the 7,300-pound “Mammoth Cheese”, which was co-manufactured by local producers to put Ingersoll on the map.

“The famous ‘Mammoth Cheese’ travelled to exhibitions in Toronto, Sarasota, New York, Paris France and London, England,” states the Inn on its history page. And this is why the Ingersoll Cheese & Agricultural Museum is located in the region. Now don’t you love that fun fact?
