Autumn is here, and along with the slightly cooler weather, the season brings crisp, clear skies and longer nights, making it the perfect time to go stargazing. This year has been filled with celestial events, from full moon Supermoons to a once-in-a-lifetime solar eclipse, to a planetary parade that was more than two centuries in the making. Thankfully, we’ll have a few other celestial events to look out for before the year ends, and the Chronos Observatory is one of the perfect spots to view the awe-inspiring night skies.

The Observatory is located on the gorgeous grounds of the sprawling 42-acre Calamus Estate Winery, nestled on top of the Niagara Escarpment, near Balls Falls. While the estate is well-known for hosting wine-tasting events and lavish weddings, guests can join members from the Niagara Centre of the Royal Astronomical Society of Canada for special stargazing events. The observatory allows patrons to view the heavens from a telescope located in the Observatory tower (one of the largest in Niagara) as well as in the vineyard.

The winery sometimes hosts ‘stargazing’ nights, where guests can experience an evening of wine, delicious food, live music, lawn games, and spectacular views of the sky!

Other astronomical activities you can look out for this year include the Draconid Meteor Shower (a minor meteor shower that produces about 10 meteors per hour), running from Oct. 6-10, peaking on the night of Oct. 7. Also check out the Geminids Meteor Shower, which is considered the king of the meteor showers, producing up to 120 multicolored meteors per hour at its peak! This will run from Dec. 7-17, peaking the night of the 13th and the morning of the 14th.

The Chronos Observatory at the Calamus Estate Winery is located at 3100 Glen Road, Jordan Station (about a 1.5-hour drive from Toronto). Click here for other places to go stargazing near Toronto.
