Depending on whether you perceive your margarita glass as half full or half empty, mastering this classic cocktail can be straightforward or quite challenging. Traditionally consisting of two parts tequila, one part triple sec or another orange liqueur and one part lime juice, most variations are shaken and served in a coupe glass with a salted rim.

There is ample opportunity for creativity beyond those basics as you adjust your drink to match your individual preferences and mood. Modify the ingredient ratios to customize the flavours for your ideal enjoyment – choose your adventure for more fruity, spicy or savoury twists. If you share my preference, or limited glassware options, you might even decide to serve it on the rocks, without salt, in a tumbler or an old-fashioned glass.

In honour of International Margarita Day celebrations on Feb. 22, here are three blanco or silver tequilas with distinctive grassy and peppery notes to fortify the base of your cocktail as you start your flavour quest.
