Making friends in adulthood is hard, or at least, harder than it is than in your teens or twenties. With an epidemic of loneliness on the rise and the continued disappearance of so-called “third places” across the United States, how does one go about making (and maintaining) relationships in our hectic and harrowing world? For Tim Robinson’s character in Friendship, the new comedy from A24 and Andrew DeYoung (PEN15, Our Flag Means Death), friendship isn’t much farther than a few doors away.

Friendship stars Tim Robinson (I Think You Should Leave), as Craig, a mild-mannered suburbanite who meets his neighbor, Austin (Paul Rudd), after the latter’s package is mistakenly delivered to his house. After meeting up for a drink, the two become fast friends – hanging out together and experiencing the euphoria that comes with hanging out with your homies. Look how happy they are! Just a bunch of buds drinking suds and having fun.

Unfortunately, Austin grows worn out with Craig’s company, which is news Craig doesn’t take very well. What initially appears as an awkward, albeit earnest comedy about male adult friendships quickly veers into psychological thriller territory, with Craig appearing to resort to anything and everything to win back Austin’s friendship. And if he can’t do that’? Well… we’ll have to see just how dire this situation gets when Friendship premieres in theaters this May.
